Innovative Birmingham Partnership to Secure Employment Success

Eleven Birmingham residents are the first to benefit from an innovative new scheme aimed at addressing the skills gap created by the growth of the Energy Efficiency market.

Aimed at those currently unemployed and looking for work, this programme is a result of a partnership between a group of employers, training providers and local support services to provide residents with the experience and qualifications in demand.

Carillion Energy Service and Carillion Training Services have been working with training providers Group Horizon, Job Centre Plus, Rikem Training and Consultancy and Theo Langston Group to help local people benefit from the opportunities created as a result of the Council’s Birmingham Energy Savers and Green Deal projects.

Rikem’s Rita Patel Miller has been instrumental in bringing all the partners together and steering the project towards success, “It has really been great to be at the centre of such an exciting project which will really enable local people to benefit economically – the enthusiasm and interest in this programme has been phenomenal and the candidates have really enjoyed all aspects of the programme”.

With the support of such well-established employers and partners those on the course are guaranteed an interview and work experience from businesses within Carillion’s supply chain.

Kat Crockford, Birmingham Energy Savers Employment & Training Manager is working hard to raise the profile of the opportunities on offer. She says “There is a definite need to up-skill local people so that they are ready for the developments that are taking place as part of Green Deal. There are simply not enough trained External Wall Insulation staff in Birmingham, and it is fantastic to see how much the candidates have enjoyed the programme and are excited about the opportunities ahead”.

The programme runs over six weeks, providing learners with the key skills needed in plastering and external wall insulation to secure work. The experience gained on the course is hands-on and easily transferrable to the workplace giving individuals the best opportunity to secure long lasting employment.

With candidates ranging in age from 19 to 54, the learners are very excited about their future employment opportunities. Gary Wade commented, “This course has been a wonderful experience“.

“I would recommend this course to other unemployed people who are looking to work in a new field, it is a fantastic course and a great team” said Alan Whitehouse.

Theo Langston have been championing this project from the outset. Lawrie Newton, Operations Manager at Theo Langston Energy Solutions, said: “The delivery of sustainable technologies, especially External Wall Insulation will be big business here in the Midlands during this forthcoming year and beyond. It really does demonstrate that there are people out there who want to find work and more importantly, that they are willing to undertake training to up-skill themselves in order to achieve this.”

Group Horizon are Renewable and Energy Efficiency specialists and as such have been able to provide in-depth accredited training within this sector, giving individuals the competitive edge when applying for jobs. Group Horizon Director Peter Behan said “We are very excited to partners of such credible organisations who like us see the huge importance in investing in local people and supporting them into local jobs in this exciting and developing sector”.

The partnership continues to go from strength to strength and as such there are many more exciting projects in the pipeline to benefit residents and businesses alike.
