What is a Smart Meter?

Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters. They tell how much energy is being used through a display in the home and provide accurate billing. The meters directly communicate with energy suppliers removing the need for meter readings.

How does the Smart Meter Work?

Smart meters take accurate day to day readings of your energy use. These readings are wirelessly sent to your energy provider so they will always have up to date reading of your meter. This also means that you will no longer need to take a meter reading yourself.

Will it save money?

Having a smart meter won’t automatically save you money. How much you save will mainly depend on how you use the information gathered from your in home display. The in home display will allow you to see how much energy you are using over the day, month and year, which will highlight ways you could cut your energy usage and your bills.

When are they being installed?

The smart meter rollout starts in 2015 and will run until 2020. Once the rollout begins, your energy supplier will contact you to arrange the installation of your smart meter.

Who installs the Smart Meters?

Your energy supplier will send one of their team to fit the meter in your property.

Are Smart Meters Safe?

Smart meters are covered by UK and EU product safety legislation, which requires manufacturers to ensure that any product placed on the market is safe.

What are the targets for Smart Meter Installation?

The UK Government has committed to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 and has set a target for around 50 million properties to have a smart meter installed by 2020.
